Why it matters
The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) lives only on this island. It is the top predator here. There are no lions or tigers to compete with it, so the leopard shapes prey populations and holds a central place in the dry-zone food web.
Yala is known for one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere. That does not mean a sighting is guaranteed. It means the habitat still supports a strong population when roads, tourism, and snares are managed with care.
Watching leopards well means time in the right parks, early starts, and respect for distance. The goal is a real encounter in wild habitat, not a rushed checklist.

Core parks
Most strong leopard routes use one or two of these parks, not a race through all three in a few nights.
South-east dry zone
Open plains, rock outcrops, and water holes. Block I and nearby ranges are famous for frequent leopard activity, especially in the dry months.
East coast dry zone
Riverine forest, lagoons, and quieter tracks than Yala. Good for guests who want space and a calmer vehicle rhythm.
North-west dry zone
Large, green, and built for long loops. Sightings can take more time. The trade-off is scenery, room to work, and a different leopard feel.
A typical day starts before first light, rests through the hot middle hours, and returns for the last two hours of sun. Midday is for shade, lunch, and a short break, not for forcing every road on the map.
Dry months in the south-east (roughly May to September, with local variation) often improve track access and pull animals toward water. Monsoon weeks can still produce strong frames, but roads soften and timing becomes less predictable.
Photographers who want cleaner backgrounds and time to wait. Couples and small groups who prefer a private pace. Anyone who understands that leopards are wild and that we plan habitat time carefully without promising a sighting.
Birds, elephants, or sloth bears can sit inside a leopard-focused week when the route has room. The priority stays clear so the days do not turn into a rush.
